The End of the Average Programmer: The Market Has No Mercy on Those Who Fear AI—or Surrender to It

Programming jobs have not disappeared, but the era of easy opportunities is over.

Résumés have piled up, skills have become increasingly similar, and thousands of applicants can now build ordinary applications. Then artificial intelligence arrived, turning tasks that once required days into hours and enabling one person to complete work that previously demanded a small team.

The market is therefore no longer willing to pay a high salary to someone who offers little more than what an intelligent tool can generate within minutes.

However, claiming that programming jobs have vanished is inaccurate. Software developers remain among the fastest-growing technology professions, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 10% growth in software development and testing employment between 2025 and 2035. The profession itself, however, is changing: the standard of competence is rising, while repetitive work is rapidly losing value.

The real problem is not the disappearance of jobs, but the disappearance of value from the average, replaceable programmer.

Code Is No Longer the Scarce Commodity

In the past, programmers distinguished themselves by knowing how to transform ideas into code. Today, AI models can generate thousands of lines, create tests and documentation, build prototypes, and suggest system structures within a short time.

Value has therefore moved beyond writing lines of code toward deeper abilities:

  • Understanding the real problem.
  • Selecting the appropriate architecture.
  • Discovering hidden errors and assumptions.
  • Protecting systems from vulnerabilities and failure.
  • Measuring and improving performance.
  • Accepting responsibility for the final product.

AI can suggest code, but it does not face the customer when data is lost, explain a system failure to management, or bear the consequences of a poor engineering decision.

Responsibility remains human, and therefore understanding must remain human as well.

Three Programmers Competing for the Same Position

The First: The Programmer Who Depends on the Machine

This person does not use artificial intelligence; he hides behind it.

He requests a project and receives one. He copies error messages into the model and accepts new solutions until the program appears to work. Yet he does not know why it works, where it might fail, or how to repair it when it encounters a situation the machine has not learned to handle.

He may appear fast initially, but he is building a system he does not intellectually own. At the first serious failure, he turns from a programmer into a messenger carrying error reports between two AI models.

The 2025 Stack Overflow survey reveals the danger clearly: 84% of respondents use or plan to use AI tools, yet more developers distrust the accuracy of their output than trust it. The most frequently reported frustration was receiving solutions that appear correct but are not entirely correct.

The most dangerous result produced by AI is not an obvious mistake, but an elegant mistake: clean, convincing code that conceals a defect only genuine understanding can uncover.

The Second: The Expert Who Rejects Artificial Intelligence

This is a strong programmer who understands algorithms, architecture, memory, and performance, but rejects modern tools out of fear, pride, or nostalgia for the past.

He will remain a professional, but he will pay the price of slowness.

When another professional uses AI to generate tests, documentation, prototypes, and solution comparisons—and then reviews the results through genuine expertise—that professional may accomplish in one day what the AI-resistant programmer needs several days to complete.

Mastery has not lost its value, but it is no longer sufficient when separated from the tools of the age. Rejecting a tool is not proof of genius, just as using it is not proof of progress. The real standard is the quality of the result and the depth of control over it.

The Third: The AI-Amplified Programmer

This is the real winner.

He was a strong programmer before artificial intelligence and becomes even stronger with it. He understands the problem, defines the requirements, constraints, and risks, and then uses the model to accelerate implementation, research, and comparison.

He does not accept machine-generated output merely because it looks impressive. He reviews it, tests it, challenges it, measures its performance, and rejects it when he cannot fully understand it.

When the machine makes a mistake, he detects it. When it proposes a superficial solution, he sends it back. When it generates obscure code, he stops until he understands it or rewrites it himself.

Human depth, machine speed, and engineering responsibility.

A programmer who combines these strengths will not merely outperform the average programmer. He may even surpass someone with greater technical expertise if that expert insists on working exclusively with yesterday’s tools.

Artificial Intelligence Did Not Kill Programming

It killed the value of repetitive programming work.

Every task that can be described easily and verified quickly will face increasing automation: boilerplate code, data transformations, conventional interfaces, simple tests, and initial documentation.

Defining problems, designing systems, analysing risks, securing data, optimising performance, and understanding human needs will remain areas in which the market requires genuine engineers.

The Future of Jobs Report indicates that 39% of workers’ existing skills may change or become outdated between 2025 and 2030. Nearly two-thirds of employers plan to recruit people with AI-related skills, while 40% expect to reduce their workforce where tasks can be automated.

The meaning is clear: the job will remain, but its content is changing. Those who cling to the old content may disappear even if the job title survives.

Rules for Survival and Excellence

  1. Think before prompting: Define the problem and its constraints before opening the model.
  2. Design before generating: Do not allow the first automated suggestion to determine your project’s architecture.
  3. Never accept code you cannot explain: Every line added to your project becomes your responsibility.
  4. Test the output and do not be deceived by appearances: A successful build does not prove that the system is correct.
  5. Use the model as an adversary as well: Ask it to search for vulnerabilities, weaknesses, and failure cases.
  6. Preserve your manual abilities: Regularly write, analyse, and debug code without assistance.
  7. Deepen your specialisation: Superficial knowledge has become cheap, making deep expertise more valuable.
  8. Measure real productivity: Achievement is not the number of generated files, but reaching software that is correct, secure, and maintainable.

The True End of the Average Programmer

The real competition is not between humans and artificial intelligence, but between:

  • A programmer who understands and uses AI.
  • A programmer who understands but rejects AI.
  • A user who employs AI but understands nothing.

The first will lead the market.

The second will remain capable, but may lose the race to someone who combines quality with speed.

The third may advance rapidly at first, but will collapse when confronted with the first real problem that cannot be solved through random prompts.

The era in which being “good enough” was sufficient has ended. The market is crowded, competition is global, and modern tools can give one person the productivity of an entire team.

This is not the end of programmers. It is the end of the average, replaceable programmer.

The future will belong neither to the machine alone nor to the person who closes the door on it. It will belong to the person who knows when to use it, when to doubt it, when to reject its suggestions, and when to return to personal knowledge and experience.

Understanding is the foundation.
Mastery is the fortress.
Artificial intelligence is the lever.

Those who possess all three will rise above the crowd. Those who possess only the machine will fall at the first serious test. Those who possess skill but reject the lever will watch others combine strength with speed and move ahead.

The question is no longer: Will artificial intelligence take a programmer’s job?

The correct question is: Which programmer will get the job in the age of AI?

The answer is clear: the programmer who understands deeply, executes precisely, uses artificial intelligence consciously, and accepts responsibility for everything released under his name.
